Dell EMC Expects New PowerMax, Refreshed XtremIO X2 All-flash Arrays To Help Arrest Storage Sales Slip

Dell EMC on Tuesday refreshed two of its high-performance all-flash storage lines, with the flagship VMAX, now known as PowerMax, going full speed ahead thanks to the adoption of NVMe technology, and the XtremIO X2 line gaining a new lower-cost entry point.

The refresh of the two all-flash storage array families was unveiled at the Dell Technologies World, held this week in Las Vegas.

The major enhancement to Dell EMC's all-flash storage array portfolio comes at a time when that portfolio has lost market share over the past year.

[Related: Dell EMC Launches All-Flash Storage Barrage]

While Dell EMC is still the leading vendor of all flash arrays, with a market share of 29.0 percent during the fourth quarter of 2017, that is down year-over-year from a market share of 38.2 percent, according to an April report published by Wells Fargo Securities citing its own and IDC data.

That drop in market share was caused by a year-over-year 16.2-percent fall in sales of the Dell EMC VMAX flagship line along with a 16.2-percent drop in XtremIO revenue, Wells Fargo Securities reported.

Sam Grocott, senior vice president of marketing for Dell EMC's Infrastructure Solutions group, told CRN that he is unable at this time to discuss actual sales figures for specific product lines.

Grocott also said he has not seen that particular report, and that the Dell EMC numbers cited in the report do not reflect the actual market situation in part because of a change how the company marks its financial quarters.

"And remember, we are the leading all-flash storage vendor," he said. "Our market share is higher than our top two competitors' combined."

Dell EMC's new PowerMax all-flash array, formerly known as the VMAX line, is a complete architecture refresh of the prior offerings built from the ground-up to be ready for the latest storage media technologies including the new NVMe flash storage and future server-class memory, Grocott said.

It is targeted at next-generation applications such as real-time analytics, genomics, artificial intelligence, IoT, and mobile applications, he said.

Key to the new PowerMax is the fact that it was designed for industry-standard, not proprietary, components including NVMe media, he said.

Other vendors are using proprietary NVMe components, he said. "We believe that will take them off the innovation path as industry-standard components get enhanced," he said.

The PowerMax also represents Dell EMC's first entry in the implementation of machine learning to improve performance and provide proactive system health monitoring, Grocott. The company is approaching machine learning in the PowerMax in two ways.

First, the new PowerMaxOS storage operating system takes advantage of years of performance and maintenance data collected from the VMAX installed base. Second, it takes advantage of real-time data within the array itself.

"By leveraging both, the PowerMax can make decisions about what data or block goes on what tier of storage to free up the high-performance tiers," he said. "It's leveraging over 40 million data sets, and gets smarter from the first read-write-put-get operation."

The PowerMax is available in two models.

The PowerMax 2000 scales to up to 1 petabyte of effective capacity across two "PowerBricks" after in-line deduplication and compression, and offers up to 1.7 million IOPs of performance, Grocott said.

The PowerMax 8000 scales to up to 4 petabytes of effective capacity across eight PowerBricks, with up to 10 million IOPs of performance, he said.

The PowerMax is scheduled to ship next week, he said.

Also new from Dell EMC is the latest version of the XtremIO X2, the current iteration of the company's XtremIO all-flash storage array.

The new version of the XtremIO X2 adds native replication, Grocott said. It is data-aware asynchronous replication which only sends changes to the data set to the remote site to cut bandwidth requirements by up to 75 percent with no impact to the performance, he said. The replication process can be initiated with only three steps, he said.

The new XtremIO X2 is priced at a 55-percent lower entry price point than the original XtremIO family on a per-gigabyte basis, Grocott said.

The addition of NVMe makes is a huge enhancement to Dell EMC's flagship storage offering, said Michael Tanenhaus, principal at Mavenspire, an Annapolis, Md.-based solution provider and long-time Dell EMC channel partner.

"The VMAX's competitive difference is that it is indestructible," Tanenhaus told CRN. "Now the PowerMax is indestructible and ultra-fast. Anyone in the trade knows SSDs are a stepping stone to performance. NVMe is a part of the natural progression."

The enhancements to the XtremIO X2 seem to be the latest in the logical progression to the product line, Tanenhaus said. When the XtremIO was first introduced a year ago, the key changes were in the software to provide a host of new storage services to the line, he said.

"If it's just performance someone wants, any vendor can provide that," he said. "But if you want low-latency file storage, go with XtremIO X2. Having all the data services makes this offering more firmly entrenched in the data center than if it were just a question of speed."

XtremIO X2 offers a landing zone on which channel partners can expand their clients' data center infrastructures, Tanenhaus said.

"If you can assign two or more workloads to XtremIO X2, it will work well and give partners a platform on which to expand," he said. "Once people understand it, they will want to do more. And XtremIO X2 scales well."

Dell: EMC Will Get Us Into The Data Center

Dell Computer EMC

Dell is positioning the new Clariion CX600, which EMC unveiled this week, as its high-end array, and using it to enter the heterogeneous Unix/NT enterprise space, said Matt Brisse, Dell product manager for the new array, called the Dell/EMC CX600.

Dell will also target 100 percent Unix shops for the first time with this array, Brisse said.

"Dell has a commodity-based sales model," he said. "We can bring a value to those customers, where before they could only use proprietary or monolithic products. . . . Traditionally, Dell has a maniacal focus on costs. Now we can bring this to the Unix market."

While Dell currently offers NT and Linux servers, it does have the storage management software capabilities to leverage in mixed Unix/NT environments for a seamless user model, Brisse said.

Eighty percent of Dell's systems consultants are now Unix-certified, thanks to training and other support from partners such as EMC, Brisse said.

Consulting, planning, design and implementation services for the Clariion will be done by Dell-badged employees or, if customers prefer, personnel from third parties such as EMC, said Brisse. Dell employees are currently going through thousands of training sessions each day, including mandatory Unix training, leveraging EMC procedures, he said.

Further cementing the Dell bond with EMC is the first public acknowledgement of a manufacturing arrangement between the two. EMC executives this week said an entry-level version of the CX600 is planned to be introduced six to eight months later. The entry-level model will be manufactured by both EMC and Dell, but EMC's solution providers will be tapped to resell the EMC version.

Solution providers are concerned about Dell's low-cost push into the enterprise and how that will affect their EMC business.

The problem is not just that Dell comes in with lower numbers, said Hope Hayes, president of Alliance Technology Group, a Hanover, Md.-based EMC partner. It is more a case of how the vendor combines products and moves margins between various products to compete in the storage space.

"We see customers say they want to buy Dell servers or other products," Hayes said. "They say they also want disks. We can bring in the disks. But if Dell hears of the deal, they will come in and move things around to make the numbers. You can never beat Dell on price."

One solution provider who requested anonymity said the Dell model is driving prices down and putting pressure on margins.

"We focus on value, so Dell's model is contrary to ours. Yes, you can argue that you can make it up on value services. But we like to get margin on the hardware, too. When [Dell's in the picture, it becomes more of a price-driven scenario than a value-driven scenario. The lower end you get, the more formidable the competition with Dell.

At the lower end, deals are more margin-driven anyway, the solution provider said. "The trick to competing with Dell is know when to walk," he said. "If the price is the sole determining factor, it's hard to compete."

Short-term spiffs and special pricing to Dell from EMC shows that EMC's direct guys don't understand marketing, said another solution provider. "Sales people are coin-operated," the solution provider said. "But what about us? We are always trying to win the direct guys' hearts. We bring them into accounts. But they can make more money with Dell. Sure, EMC is saying it's moving into the channel. But the biggest beneficiary to that is their Dell relationship."

Not all solution providers agree that EMC's relationship with Dell hurts the channel.

James Kernan, president and CEO of Networks Plus Technology Group, a San Diego-based solution provider, said his company resells Dell products, including the EMC-made Clariion storage arrays, and even does subcontracting for Dell on services such as on-site consulting, design, installation and support. "This happens especially if we are in the account and create the opportunity for Dell," he said.

It helps Networks Plus that not many people resell Dell, said Kernan. "We actually make more margin on Dell than with many so-called channel-friendly vendors," he said. "If you sell Dell as a solution instead of as a single box, it works."

A new study suggests getting that cute dog in one's more mature years might be a good idea after all.

Researchers from the Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China, found that pet ownership can be associated with slower rates of developing dementia.

The study, published on Tuesday in JAMA Network Open, determined that owning a pet made a difference in verbal memory and fluency among adults who lived alone.

The study's author, professor Ciyong Lu, said in the study that slower rates of declining verbal memory and fluency were seen in those who lived alone — but not in those who lived with others.

"Pet ownership offset the associations between living alone and declining rates [of] verbal memory and verbal fluency," he said.

Researchers found that owning a pet helps those with dementia.  (iStock)

The research involved more than 7,900 participants over the age of 50, with roughly 35% of them owning pets and 27% of them living alone.

In the study, Lu said that those living alone with a pet showed slower rates of developing signs of dementia.

"These findings suggest that pet ownership may be associated with slower cognitive decline among older adults living alone," he said.

"Contrary to living alone," the authors also wrote, "pet ownership (for example, raising dogs and cats) is related to reduced loneliness, an important risk factor for dementia and cognitive decline."

A new study found that owning a pet could be beneficial for people with signs of dementia who live alone.  (iStock)

Lu said that clinical trials will be necessary in order to confirm the study's findings.

Currently, more than 55 million people worldwide have dementia — with nearly 10 million new cases each year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, which is currently the 7th leading cause of death, the WHO also notes.

Early symptoms of dementia include forgetfulness, being confused, losing track of time, misjudging distances, feeling anxious, experiencing personality changes, engaging in inappropriate behavior and more. (iStock)

Early symptoms of dementia include forgetfulness, being confused, losing track of time, misjudging distances, feeling anxious, personality changes, inappropriate behavior and more.

There is currently no cure for dementia or for someone developing signs of dementia, but the WHO suggests that staying active and continuing to stimulate the brain may help.

Fox News Digital reached out to Lu for further comment.
