The A-level exam results are out in the UK. Over 350,000 teenagers have been placed on undergraduate courses, according to UCAS, the organization that manages applications to UK full-time higher education courses. And while they jump for joy, excited at the prospect of going to university, some social commentators and education critics are harrumphing. They feel that despite their success, these exam-savvy youngsters are woefully ill-prepared for the real world. And that the ones who go to university are simply entering outdated institutions that don’t prepare them for the world of work. Most university courses aren’t vocational. Yet, the debts that mount up throughout a course (an average of £50,000) are forcing students to create a “personal brand” and a portfolio of work before they leave – so that they have a chance of competing in a crowded marketplace once they graduate. In the past, students were only expected to step-up their writing, thinking and analytical skills while at university. Now, they’re expected to take Instagram-worthy internships and use social media to network their way to success. They’re expected to document their skills and capabilities across a range of social media so that they can effectively secure work opportunities. A report from the Department of Education showed that in 2017, graduates and postgraduates had higher employment rates than non-graduates. And that the average, working-age graduate earned £10,000 more than the average non-graduate. So good, so far. But this emphasis on securing work is contributing to a hole in their university life. This manifests as poorer quality reading and writing skills on the essays they write throughout their course. And the writing they do in the business world. This is not new. And it’s not down to youngsters spending more time on Snapchat than perusing the abridged works of Shakespeare. But it’s a skill gap that doesn’t seem to be closing. Many arrive at university after years of teachers “teaching to the test”. Students haven’t necessarily been given the opportunity to think for themselves. At least, not in an academic sense. Their teachers have been judged on results throughout their teaching careers. So, their primary task hasn’t been to help students to write fluently, or accurately. In fact, while 26.4% of exams scored an A or A*, just 1.8% of English language exams were graded A*. Overall, the teachers have done their jobs, which has been to get their pupils to pass. And the overall pass rate for 2018 sits at 97.6%. But when school leavers get to university, many will find themselves in a quandary. It’s likely that they’ll feel a pressure “to get their money’s worth”. Yet, they’ll also be faced with a barrage of new concepts and theories. And they may not have the writing skills to communicate them effectively. Ironically, this can hamper their chances in the job market. A Royal Literary Fund report called “Writing Matters” labeled the writing skills of students “shocking” and “inadequate”. What’s more, an academic survey cited in this report found that 90% of lecturers said it was necessary to teach writing skills to students. Yet, university is structured so that the teaching of writing skills is not embedded into courses. It’s a veritable chicken-and-egg situation. In any case, qualifications alone don’t sell themselves anymore. So, students need to see themselves as a package, not as a vessel for their exam results. They need to hone their soft skills – their ability to think well, write well, be emotionally intelligent and communicate with themselves and others. Employers want to hire people who are creative, resourceful and resilient. So, as students crack open the prosecco and celebrate their results – I say we give them a break. Going to university is a massive life transition in itself, as is starting work for the first time. It’s easy to forget the days when you couldn’t boil an egg. And it’s easy to forget that it’s the system itself that isn’t teaching students the writing and communication skills they need to truly succeed in life and work. Operational intelligence software developer Splunk is expanding the machine-learning capabilities of its products, debuting new releases of its flagship Splunk Enterprise platform and several applications that leverage machine data for business intelligence, security and other tasks. Splunk, holding its .conf2016 conference for customers and partners in Orlando,F la. this week, also announced new recruits for its Adaptive Response Initiative through which security technology vendors support the vendor's Splunk Enterprise Security system. "Machine data is absolutely key to digital transformation," said President and CEO Doug Merritt in a keynote speech Tuesday that kicked off the .conf2016 event. "Machine learning enables organizations to get deeper insights from their machine data and ultimately increases the opportunity our customers can gain from digital transformation." [Related: 2016 Cloud Partner Programs Guide] He went on to say that the "machine data fabric" is the most effective way for businesses to "collect, store, analyze, interpret and share" data throughout an enterprise. Splunk's software is used to collect and analyze operational data, including machine data generated by IT systems and networks, security systems and Internet of Things devices, to generate actionable insights. Splunk Enterprise and Splunk Cloud 6.5, both generally available now, includes a number of new and enhanced capabilities that the company said improves their advanced analytics by making it easier to create machine- learning models for IT, security and business use cases. The new releases also simplify data preparation and expand data analysis to a broader range of users. "We're doubling down on advanced analytics," Merritt said. That resonates with Laura Vetter, vice president of analytics at Kinney Group, a Splunk partner and reseller based in Indianapolis. She said that the product's new table data views for both analytical specialists and occasional users "is going to be a game-changer" in helping analysts process and analyze data more quickly. Kinney Group President and CEO Jim Kinney added that Splunk's software, and especially the new release, helps business get more value out of machine data more quickly. "Machine learning, deep learning, can provide a lot of value to the customers," said John Ansett, director of operational intelligence at Trace3, a Splunk reseller and consulting partner based in Irvine, Calif. Ansett said the "open nature" of the Splunk platform makes it possible to develop machine-learning algorithms and "very advanced capabilities" on a large scale. Splunk said at .conf2016 that a number of security vendors had joined its Adaptive Response Initiative including Acalvio, Anomali, Cisco Security, CrowdStrike, DomainTools, ForeScout, Okta, Proofpoint, Qualys, Recorded Future and Symantec. San Francisco-based Splunk is also investing undisclosed amounts in Acalvio and in Insight Engines, the latter a developer of software that helps users search for and analyze machine data within Splunk systems using natural language techniques. And Splunk announced a new licensing program that, starting Nov. 1, will provide free licenses for test and development purposes. Splunk CTO Snehal Antani said in a press conference the move would make it easier for partners to help customers expand their use of Splunk by giving them more opportunities to experiment with the vendor's software. Personal Belongings: All items (hats, purses, scarves, hoodies, etc.) will need to be stored in a bag provided to the student upon their arrival to the Testing Center. These bags are sized to fit under their testing station during their exam time. We do ask students not to bring additional items other than what is required for their exam to the Testing Center. We understand that students may be taking exams in-between classes and may have backpacks. In this case, they will need to store them in one of the bags provided by the PTS staff. If a student is seen reaching into the provided bag during an exam, they are at risk of having their exam terminated as a possible breach of academic integrity. Students will continue to turn in their cell phones and smart watches to the proctor at the time of check-in as has been the procedure in the past. Exam Start Time: Students must start their exam within 15 minutes of their scheduled start time. Failure to start on time may result in not being able to take the exam. Please be sure to take this into consideration when planning travel to the Testing Center. PUID: Students are required to present their PUID to check-in for each exam. Bestselling author and entrepreneur Deepak Chopra may be known the world over as a holistic health and wellness guru — he's counseled scores of people to lead better, calmer and healthier lives over the decades — but he also has a lighter side. In an on-camera interview this week just as his new book, "Quantum Body: The New Science of Living a Longer, Healthier, More Vital Life," was published, Chopra poked a little fun at himself when asked how he takes care of personal well-being. "Well, my family doesn't take me seriously, and that's good," he said. "And so," he said, "I don't take myself seriously." DEEPAK CHOPRA'S URGENT MESSAGE: WE NEED A ‘PANDEMIC OF JOY’ Chopra went on about how he personally stays healthy. "I sleep well," he said. "I practice meditation and yoga. And my only purpose is to serve the world. I don't have any personal ambition. And that means no stress, either." The "no stress" philosophy carries some heavy weight, though. Chopra is focused, through his foundations and his work on many fronts, on helping people lead lighter, brighter lives through their thoughts and actions — and to help heal themselves of afflictions. And he remains hopeful. "The science of biology," he said, "says that less than 5% of disease is due to what we call fully penetrant genes, which guarantee the disease. So if somebody has a BRCA gene, for example, they're going to get breast cancer. And the only treatment thus far has been a preventive mastectomy, etc. That applies to 5% of all disease." Now, he said, "we are looking at a very exciting possibility called gene editing, which will get rid of the 5% that are genetically fully determined." Meanwhile, he said, "some 95% of illness is right now due to epigenetic modulations of gene activity, which means our experiences determine gene activity." ‘REMARKABLE’ GENE-EDITING TREATMENT FOR SICKLE CELL DISEASE IS APPROVED BY FDA He said that "all disease, whether it's cancer or autoimmune illness or dementia or degenerative disorders or heart disease or metabolic syndrome or diabetes — these can all be affected by things like how we sleep, or our emotions, or how we manage stress, or how we can use diet to change the microbial combination of our gene expression in the gut."
So "put all of this" — and much more — "together," he added, "and we have a holistic way of not only preventing disease, but even reversing it and extending our lifespan. You can even change the activity of our biological clock." His new book, he said, is about "how you actually make chronic disease optional and actually extend your lifespan and your health span. It's not good enough to live a long life," he added, "if you're not living a healthy long life. That's what my new book is about." Fox News Digital: Given all that's going on in the world today, do people need healing perhaps now more than ever, in your view? Deepak Chopra: Yes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we used to look at who was getting sick, who was getting to the point where they died. And as you know, some of the elderly had chronic disease, also. But there were young people who were getting very sick and also dying. And when we looked at all of these people who had what we call intense morbidity and mortality, they all had inflammatory storms in their body. GRATITUDE PRACTICES CAN IMPROVE BOTH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH, EXPERT SAYS: ‘PROFOUND EFFECTS’ They not only had inflammation in their bodies, but they also had stress, depression and extreme fear. Any time stress overrides your biological responses, you actually can predict that there's going to be sickness.
As a result of that, we started looking at our nervous system, a part of the nervous system called the parasympathetic nervous system. And particularly one nerve called the vagus nerve, which can be activated through various things like exercise, like mind-body coordination, breathing techniques, yoga and emotional resiliency. You can actually activate the healing system. In the past 30 years ago, we didn't have the science behind it. But today we have very good science. And it's very important, because if you're peaceful at home, then you extend that to your family, extend that to your community. And I hope that if we extend that to a critical mass, we can have a more peaceful, just, sustainable, healthier and joyful world. That's the ultimate dream. Q: Talk to us about your work at the Chopra Foundation — you're offering many programs that you didn't always offer. Chopra: One program we have now is called Never Alone (NeverAlone.love). It's a program for mental well-being and suicide prevention. We have several million people engaged in that program, creating global communities of support for each other through attention — which means deep listening affection, deep caring appreciation, deep gratitude and an acceptance of everyone. The program is very, very popular right now, especially among teens because we also use emotional chatbots. So people don't feel judged. SELF-CARE INSIGHTS DURING HOLIDAYS THAT MAY HELP YOU HEAL, BE HAPPIER, ENJOY YOURSELF MORE We also have a program called "The Soul of Leadership." We'll be offering free leadership [skills and training] to anyone in the world who needs or wants leadership skills. Those are just some of the programs. Q: When people reach out, do their queries fall into any specific categories or themes? Chopra: They're mostly about health — mental and physical — and they're also about conflict resolution. Everything is connected. And I think there's a deeper interest, especially among millennials — most millennials are kind of fed up with the old way of dealing with things, and they're looking at resources online now. Q: What in particular are they mentioning to you and your teams — political issues? The election season? Wars? Money? Jobs? Chopra: All of the above. Also, the younger generation is very concerned about climate change and how it relates to mental and physical illness. Q: If you had to deliver words of wisdom ahead of the New Year of 2024, what would you say? Chopra: We can't depend on any special interest group or even political leaders. We have to be the change we want to see in the world. We start with ourselves — peace and love in action and supporting each other. And that's the ultimate idea of community.
We have a common identity. We call it humanity. We complement each other's strengths and we can offer emotional support. Then we can find creative solutions for every problem in the world. And this is the time for creativity, because otherwise we are moving in a direction where we have medieval identities and modern capacities for destruction. And that's not a good combination.
