Robots could create a more reliable Wikipedia: study

A new study found that using artificial intelligence to police entries to open-source encyclopedias like Wikipedia could result in a more reliable source of information for users.

The study, published in Nature Machine Intelligence earlier this month, found that AI tools can help police some of the inaccurate or incomplete references that often plague online encyclopedias like Wikipedia, which could lead to improved quality and reliability, according to a report in Scientific American.

Researchers for the study developed an AI system called "SIDE," which analyzed Wikipedia references to find missing and broken links or see if the references actually support the claims of the article. For references that didn't meet the standard, the system was able to suggest better alterative references that would be more useful.

Christopher Alexander, the chief analytics officer of Pioneer Development Group, told Fox News Digital there could be some advantages to the use of AI in encyclopedias, including the idea of entirely AI-created resources.

AI CAN CONTAIN GENDER BIAS, LEADING TO POTENTIAL DISADVANTAGES FOR WOMEN, EXPERT SAYS

"The principal advantage is removing human bias. An AI could look at multiple interpretations, verify facts and constantly monitor the research or reporting around an entry," Alexander said. "Another advantage is that the AI works 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will not tire. Humans simply cannot keep up with that sort of productivity."

But there are also pitfalls, Alexander noted, including proprietary algorithms that would make it difficult for users to understand.

"The second disadvantage is found in the current state of AI platforms," Alexander said. "Presently, the AI wants, more than anything else, to make you happy. Accuracy is secondary to being useful. This can lead to AIs providing inaccurate information."

"An 'AI Wikipedia' would have more information and potentially less narrative bias."

Putting the study's system to the test, the researchers had their AI system check Wikipedia's featured articles and suggest references, with nearly 50% of cases resulting in the system's choice for a reference already being cited by an article. In cases where the system suggested alternatives, the researchers found that 21% of users preferred the citations generated by AI, compared to 10% who preferred the human citations. Another 39% did not express a preference.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

Samuel Mangold-Lenett, a staff editor at The Federalist, told Fox News Digital, an encyclopedia run by AI could produce superior results to humans versions.

ChatGPT on a laptop (Cyberguy)

"AI is perfect for developing a so-called 'better' version of Wikipedia," Mangold-Lenett said. "This would likely be another predictive text language model similar to Chat GPT and whenever someone searches a topic, like Wikipedia, a biographical-topical article is generated."

Mangold-Lenett also noted that an AI-run Wikipedia would allow "for the rapid processing of massive datasets, theoretical utilization of every relevant available source," something that would result in "ironclad fact-checking" and potentially eliminate "human error and bias."

"An 'AI Wikipedia' would have more information and potentially less narrative bias," Mangold-Lenett said.

WHAT IS CHATGPT?

Phil Siegel, the founder of the Center for Advanced Preparedness and Threat Response Simulation (CAPTRS), argued that what would be considered a "better" version of Wikipedia could be up for debate, though he noted AI would result in a "more comprehensive" product.

"It would also probably be more grammatically correct and would be better at generating and managing links across entries," Siegel told Fox News Digital. "It would also generate entries for more obscure information as long as it was quality controlled."

The study found 21% of users preferred citations generated by artificial intelligence. (Tristan Spinski for The Washington Post via Getty Images)

But Siegel also noted an AI-run encyclopedia would also be less timely and would require a "very good prompt management process that could update it quickly with new news."

"For entries that don’t ever really change, that’s OK. But you wouldn’t want to count on that, for example, for an entry for a currently famous person," Siegel said.

Ultimately, Siegel argued, AI could help supplement the tasks carried out by humans.

"I would still have humans edit and quality control this information in order to make sure it was complete, up to date and not hallucinating," Siegel said. "More of a human-artificial intelligence 'partnership.'"

Infosys’s stock dives after another disappointing earnings report

Shares of Infosys Ltd. were hit hard Thursday after the India-based information-technology consulting company reported fiscal second-quarter revenue that topped expectations, but trimmed its full-year growth outlook.

“We continue to see the overall environment where digital transformation programs and discretionary spends are low and decision making is slow,” said Chief Executive Salil Parekh in the post-earnings conference call with analysts, according to a FactSet transcript. “This is impacting our volumes.”

The stock INFY, -0.52% dove 7.3% in morning trading, putting it on track for the worst one-day performance since it tumbled 8.4% on July 20 after disappointing first-quarter results.

Net income for the quarter to Sept. 30 came in at $751 million, or 18 cents a share, compared with $749 million, or 18 cents a share, in the year-ago period, to match the FactSet consensus of 18 cents a share.

Revenue grew 3.6% to $4.72 billion, above the FactSet consensus of $4.63 billion. The company said it had its highest large-deals value at $7.7 billion in the second quarter, spread across all verticals and geographies.

Within the company’s business lines, Chief Financial Officer Nilanjan Roy said the outlook for financial services remains uncertain, given the slowdown in areas including mortgages, asset management, investment banking, cards and payment.

For the communications sector, Roy said challenges continued amid increasing operating expenditures, inflation risks, high interest rates and supply-demand imbalances. “Delays in decision making continue,” he said.

Energy spending remains cautious due to the economic slowdown, he added, and utilities continue to be hurt by high interest rates.

Meanwhile, the manufacturing sector continued to show strong growth, and the retail sector has been resilient given the focus on cost and budget consolidation and infrastructure modernization.

For fiscal 2024, the company lowered its revenue-growth outlook, excluding currency effects, to 1%-2.5% from 1%-3.5%, but it kept the outlook for operating margin unchanged at 20%-22%.

The stock has tacked on 1.6% over the past three months, while the iShares MSCI India exchange-traded fund INDA has inched up 0.2% and the S&P 500 SPX has slipped 2.4%.

We do this by working with students on an individual basis to find the opportunities that best fit their personal needs and goals.

ESF students have hundreds of education abroad programs to choose from! Programs vary in length from one week up to a full academic year and are located all over the world, so there is something for everyone! Start to browse programs below, and please reach out to oie@esf.edu with any questions or to start planning your experience abroad.

Programs

Program Details
ESF Short-Term Programs Travel abroad with an ESF faculty member and your classmates! Most short-term courses are between one to three weeks in length and take place over spring or summer break.
ESF Exchange Programs Spend a semester or summer abroad with one of ESF's university partners.
ESF Partner Study Abroad Study abroad for a winter, summer, or semester with one of ESF's recommended study abroad providers, any other SUNY institution or through another study abroad program provider. Many of these programs are immersive or field-based opportunities. Short-term, summer, and semester programs are all available!

Quick Tips

Before researching programs, think about your goals for education abroad. What type of experience are you hoping to have and what are you most interested in learning? What type of opportunities do you have limited access to in Syracuse and how might you gain those abroad? Use these questions to help guide you to better understand what it is you want out of your international experience and how you might be able to find a program that fits those criteria.

In addition to thinking about what is important to you, take some time to recognize what is not important to you. When choosing a education abroad program, it can be easier to find a "perfect" match if you understand what you are willing to compromise. Are financials the most the important piece to you? Specific classes for your major? Perhaps a research topic in a specific field? Rank the things that are most important to you so we can help you find that "perfect" opportunity.

You never know where you might find recommendations, advice or input. Ask your classmates, professors, advisors, parents, guardians, coaches, etc. You never know what you might discover. Don't forget to visit OIE as well – we serve as the repository for all of the different opportunities in front of you and can help guide you when you're not sure where to even start.

Jam out! Listening to your favorite music can reduce pain, new study suggests

Listening to your favorite music might be beneficial to your health after all.

A new study has found that those who listen to their favorite songs and performances were far more effective in reducing pain they might be feeling.

Scientists published findings in the journal Frontiers in Pain Research after conducting a study in which participants received moderately painful thermal stimuli in their inner forearm, according to SWNS.

SINGING WITH OTHERS FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS: IT CAN ‘RENEW THE SPIRIT AND ADJUST THE MINDSET’

The stimuli resulted in a sensation that felt similar to a hot cup of tea being held against their skin.

The participants at the Roy Pain Lab at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, were then instructed to listen to music excerpts that lasted about seven minutes each, according to the study.

The study found that people do not feel pain as much when they are listening to enjoyable music.  (iStock)

Scientists found that pain was "strongly reduced" among participants if they were listening to some of their favorite music.

MUSIC THERAPY SHOWS PROMISE IN TREATING DEPRESSION, SPEECH IMPEDIMENTS

Doctoral student at Montreal University Darius Valevicius told SWNS that the researchers also examined whether the results varied based on the type of music played — such as happy and cheerful music, or moving and bittersweet music.

As part of the study, people listened to music while holding a hot cup of tea against their skin.  (iStock)

"We found that reports of moving or bittersweet emotional experiences seem to result in lower ratings of pain unpleasantness, which was driven by more intense enjoyment of the music and more musical chills," he said.

Scientists concluded that "musical chills" seem to indicate a neurophysiological process that can help block those pain signals triggered when putting a hot cup of tea on bare skin, as SWNS reported.

Although it was only a small study done so far, scientists plan to explore the concept further.  (iStock)

One limitation noted in the study was the length of time the music was played — as longer periods of time could change the outcome.

Valevicius also said that the group of scientists is continuing to explore the psychology of music listening within the context of pain relief.

Fox News Digital reached out to the study's authors for further comment.

Thu, 12 Oct 2023 01:21:00 -0500 en-us text/html https://www.msn.com/ Salary hikes at Infosys: This is what HR head said at the company's town hall India’s second-largest IT company Infosys will be rolling out its salary hikes from November 1. The company's Chief Financial Officer Nilanjan Roy announced the same during the company’s second quarter earnings call.
More recently, during a companywide town hall, the IT giant's HR headShaji Mathew said that tenured employees and high performers would be the focus of the upcoming compensation review cycle at Infosys. This means that along with high performers, the company will also be rewarding employees for their loyalty to the company this year. Tenured employees are those who have spent a certain number of years with the company.
After deferring for nearly two quarters, Infosys is rolling out hikes from November. The company normally announces salary hikes in June/July, and they are effective from April. The company so far did not clarify if this means that the cycle has been changed.
In an investor call post Q2 earnings, Chief Financial Officer Nilanjan Roy noted that the wage hike was deferred to counter the inefficiencies in the company. He said that such steps have improved the company’s margins by 50 basis points. “Like I said, we had a good quarter two. And as I explained in my margin walk, we nearly had a 50 basis points improvement from our project Maximus on cost optimization,” the CFO said.
“And that gives us comfort for the rest of the year and of course a much longer program, which will take not only this year into next year as well. We also realise that we have apparent inefficiencies. Our utilisation is still low. So these will go and help us and, of course, offset the wage hikes, etc.,” he added.
TCS first to roll out hikes
Tata Consultancy Services, the largest IT company, was the first to say that it rolled out hikes in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024. The company has reportedly given 12-15 percent for top performers.
Wipro, which deferred hikes from second quarter to third quarter is likely to roll out salary hikes effective from December 1.
